GirlsxMRO

Math Research Outreach for Female & Nonbinary Students

Our Mission

Founded by Canada/USA Mathcamp alumni and MIT PRIMES research students in 2021, GirlsxMRO is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to introducing 7th to 10th grade girls and nonbinary students to the world of math beyond competitions, including advanced topics and research.

As girls who have been interested in math from a young age, we have noticed that math opportunities have always been centered around competition math and male-dominated. We strive to make advanced math approachable and available to everyone interested in math, regardless of their affinity for competition math, as well as build a supportive global community of girls and gender minorities who do math. Our FREE month-long online summer program consists of live Zoom lectures, reading groups, and fun social activities.

"GirlsxMRO is exactly the kind of program we need in STEM enrichment today: a collaborative environment with well-chosen topics that get students hooked on the big ideas in abstract math. The near-peer mentorship model of motivated, experienced high schoolers providing classes and activities to middle schoolers is a powerful tool: the mentors were recently in the shoes of their students, and know exactly what it takes to make the leap to the next level. The program does rely on having mentors of exceptional mathematical caliber and leadership skills, but GirlsxMRO is lucky to have an amazing team of high schoolers at the helm."
